Jiu Jitsu, is a collective name for Japanese martial art styles including unarmed and armed techniques, literally meaning the "art of softness". Jiu Jitsu or Ju Jutsu evolved from a self defense method or art among the samurai of feudal Japan as a fighting method for defeating an armed and armored opponent without weapons. Due to the ineffectiveness of striking against an armored opponent, the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws. These techniques were developed around the principle of using an attacker's energy and force against him, rather than directly opposing it. Today a principle commonly used in most Martial Arts Systems. There are many variations of the art, which leads to a diversity of approaches. Jiu Jitsu schools (ry? = school in Japanese) may utilize all forms of grappling techniques to some degree (i.e. throwing, trapping, joint locks, holds, gouging, disengagements, striking, and kicking). In addition to unarmed combat, many schools teach also the use of weapons. Today, Jiu Jitsu is practiced in both centuries-old and modern sport forms. Derived sport forms include the Olympic sport and Martial Art of Judo, modern Ju Jutsu, Sambo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The modern Jiu Jitsu practitioner or competitor wears a Judo like uniform, the Dogi (or short Gi).
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of traditional and non-traditional martial arts, to be used in self defense and competitions. The rules allow the use of striking (ex. Thai/Kick-boxing) and grappling (ex. Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu) techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Besides the self-defense aspect, such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.
Also known in the western world as Thaiboxing, is a martial art from Thailand and its national sport. It is similar to other styles of kickboxing, but superior to them because of the allowed use of knees and elbows. Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science Of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) and "four points" (hands and feet) like in Western boxing, Kickboxing and other sport-oriented martial arts. This is the main reason why Thaiboxing is still the most dominant of stand up styles in all arenas of fighting, but especially in the now all-style orientated world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Today there is almost as many women training in the art of Muay Thai as man, due to it's great effectiveness in self defense (knees and elbows) and the fact that is a great outlet to get rid of accumulated aggression from a stressful day at work.

Freestyle wrestlingIs international discipline and an Olympic sport, for both men and women. This style allows the use of the wrestler's or his opponent's legs in offense and defense. This style involves the wrestler winning by pinning his opponent with their back on the mat. Greco-Roman wrestlingIs also an international discipline and an Olympic sport. In Greco-Roman style, it is forbidden to hold the opponent below the belt, to make trips, and to actively use the legs in the execution of any action. Recent rule changes in Greco-Roman increase opportunities for and place greater emphasis on explosive, 'high amplitude' throws. Pinning ones opponent to the mat is one way of winning. Submission wrestlingIs a wrestling style that consists of controlling the opponent with the use of submission holds, it is also referred to as grappling or "submission grappling." Grappling, plays an important role in the practice of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and can be used as a self-defence technique. It brings together techniques of all grappling and wrestling styles like Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Sambo, Freestyle Wrestling, etc…
Sambois a martial art that originated in Russia. It is an acronym for "self-defence without weapons" in Russian and had its origins in the Soviet armed Special Forces. Its influences are varied, with techniques borrowed from sports ranging from the two international styles of Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling to Jiu Jitsu, Judo, etc... The rules for sport sambo are similar to those allowed in competitive judo, with a variety of leglocks and defense holds, while not allowing chokeholds. |
